A ex correspondent, Roy Del Ruth enter films in 1915 by vehicle of a screenwriter and gagman in favour of 'Mack Sennett' (qv). Turning to direct two years after that, he made two-reel wit near such cover comedian as 'Billy Bevan' (qv) and 'Harry Langdon (I)' (qv). He instigate directing features in the mid-'20s, but found his niche with Warner Bros. in the hasty 1930s. Del Ruth be one of the director who turned out the pensive of granular, powerfully made urban and flawed drama for which Warners become top. He vanished the studio and go to MGM, where on earth he specialized in the kind of splashy, lavish musicals that made MGM's reputation.
